ok. if i have a network connection on the fritz (see said thread on this page somewhere) and i wanted access for both PCs to the internet... could i get a USB Hub, plug my USB cable modem into it... and then plug both PCs into the USB hub. Would that work? or am i being stupid? not really a network guy... as you might have guessed.

Hi Brightstar,

What you need to do is purchase a Cable/DSL Router. Really easy to setup.

a what?
where do i get one?
will that mean i dont have to worry about all this networking crap between my computers now?

mot98...it's USB!!! You cannot just go get a router!
You need to buy a USB router, and I have never seen one in the US. If you're in the UK, there are a couple available, but they're rather pricey. Cheers,

Use a Linksys Cable / DSL Router - BEFSR41. Technically it is a Router Switch with Firewall. The router forwards IP Packets. The Switch is better than a Hub. It allows bi-directional 100 MBs (megabits per second) & is full duplex (unlike a hub).

When you buy one, (about $50 + ) Linksys Tech Support can walk you through your first installation. Use Ethernet connections on all PC's. 3Com 905TX cards are best in my opinion. (about $20.00 retail).

You will have an excellent connection plus Firewall if properly set up.

Sorry...I am assuming that the modem would have both USB and Cat5 connectors. mot98

I posted this same kind of question on an earlier post and haven't had time to update. thread16-470258

You can use the USB modem to set up your internet (Cable or DSL ?). Then you can use your NIC card in each of the two computers with a cross over cable to network the two computers and use ICS to share the Internet, this can be done through the NIC cards also. You don't need a hub or router with only two computers. We can talk about security all day long. But the simple fact is that this can be done with out the expence of a router or hub.

I was told this would not work because of the USB interface. I set it up and it works great with Win XP and WIN 2000.

I'm working on an update with step by step instructions.

I think I will post it in FAQ's.

If you want to go this route and you need help ASAP post and I will try to reply with simple instructions.

ok. ive got it networked at the mo with ICS, but that means you have to manage the networking configuration. Which i always thought was quite easy using the wizard, but not now it doesnt work and i cant find out why. So what i wanted to do was bypass the need to have both computers on if only the client pc wanted the connection.

Ok, so is it a broadband router i want? ive got NTL broadband 600k. " MERCURY 4P BROADBAND ROUTER KOB BR4P RET"
that the one? then i just plug it in to both my PCs using the ethernet, yes?
sounds simple.
