A while ago; I had something happen i thought maybe friends @ TekTips can help w/.
I have an external enclosure w/ FW and USB. Unbeknownst to me I had USB connection already plugged in and subsequently plugged in FW connection.
Needless to say my WinXP install didn't like that much.
Now 99.5% of the time NO usb removable device will connect; no hard drive, no hard drive enabled ipod, no usb pen drive. PDA connects; FW connects.
I believe i tried system restores; winxp installs.
Did I fry the MoBo? Is there something in registry perhaps?

Are there any kind of errors in the Device Manager, or even the Event Viewer?

Have you tried to use Device Manager to delete the USB root hubs that show on your machine now? Reboot and let XP rediscover the ports.

Perhaps you can image your current XP partition and install XP clean after a format and then test again. Maybe you have enough free space to slip in a parallel install of XP and use that to test with. The results will soon tell you whether it is hardware, or not, that is causing the problem.

Read the paragraph in this article.
