USB drive "J:\unreachable or corrupted" error

I am using Maxtor 300 GB external hard drive through USB. I have formatted it with NTFS. No matter which backup software I use, after a while (apx.2 hrs) it says "J:\$volume is unreachable or corrupted".
It has happened many times now. I have just bought the drive two days ago. I have to Reformat it and then start from the scratch every time it goes bad. Any suggestion?
