I recently replaced my parallel port scanner with a USB scanner on my Athlon 900 MHz, 512 RAM, PC running Win98SE. I've noticed that after a short period of time the computer will freeze---no mouse or keyboard functions. If I unplug the scanner, the system suddenly comes back to life.

I'm not sure, but I think this only occurs when Internet Explorer is open. For now, I just leave the scanner unplugged and when I need it, I make sure IE is closed.

Did a quick search here and on Microsoft, but don't believe I saw anything related to this problem.

Any insight? Thanks in advance.

silly question but a common mistake...

When you installed your scanner software was the scanner plugged in and turned on?

If so, disconnect the scanner, uninstall the software and drivers, reboot and reinstall the software again. Don't plug in the scanner again til the software is installed and one last reboot is done.

Good luck

No offense taken--I make no bones for someone being thorough.

I did not plug in the scanner until after software installation and final reboot. But...I will be happy to try a fresh install tonight anyway.
