Hello friends,
Iam having a directory for all my foxpro files (.prg and .dbf files) and I work in that directory daily. But today when I called fox exe from DOS prompt (ie) c:\foxpro\>fox, it gives me an error message saying that some .ovl file is missing. Then what I did is, I just copied the *.ovl files from another drive from network. Now what happens is after I copied these files foxpro is running. But all my prg and dbf files are missing. Nothing is there in that directory except foxpro runtime files. I was really shocked.
Plz tell me what these ovl files will do? Am I wrong in just copying the .ovl files??
Why all prg and dbf files were deleted ? Is that somebody has deleted or because of that copying of ovl files?
Plz tell me this. Iam desperate.
Thanx in advance.
Uma.

.ovl files are "overlay" files.
They are extentions to the foxpro exe.
To me it looks like a virus attack or something like that.

Perhaps some undelete programs can recover some of your lost files.

Good luck.

Uma,
The .OVL file is an Overlay file. This is used by FoxPro DOS development environment when it's started in Standard mode (not the extended version). Not having this file will simply prevent you from firing up FPD in standard mode.

If your files are missing then something or someone removed them - just restore them from your current backup. I'd also make sure you have a good virus checker running to eliminate the possibility of a virus being the cause of the missing files.

Hi Uma,
It is very unlikely that all .PRG files get deleted by a virus. It appears to me that some one specificaly deleted them.

If your OS is Windows.. look in Thrash.. May be it is there.

Another thing you can do is to make a wild search from the root directory..
Example..
C:\ > DIR myPrg*.PRG /S
OR
DIR *.prg /s/p

SO you will know, if this is available in another place.

Also in the directory where you had the prgs.. look..

ATTRIB *.PRG

In case if anything stays hidden you will know. Hope you have some sort of backup.

Immediately.. backup your .EXE or .FXPs. There are utilities to extract back code in case of extreme requirements.

Copying of OVL files should not delete *.PRG. :-( ramani :)

Hai dear friends,
Thanx all for having cleared my doubt as regards this.Yaa I have backup and I will take my prg files from that. As u all said I should do virus check first. My server is Novell netware.
Thanx a lot.
