I am upgrading from my 56kmodem to Broadband internet. I use a Packard Bell laptop (Easy One) and have been told that I need a PCMCIA card in the laptop. I don't know what one is or if there is space in my laptop for one. Can anyone throw any info my way on this please ?

Cheers

Most laptops have a PCMCIA card slot so that I wouldn't worry too much about. How long ago did you purchase this computer? Also the PCMCIA card they are speaking of is a NIC (Network Interface Card 10/100Mps Ethernet Card). That is what you need for a cable connection. If you have purchased your computer in the last 2 years you should have a PCMCIA slot on the back of the laptop. Sometimes they put them on the side. The PCMCIA is used for things such as NIC's, Wireless Modems, dial up modems, and alot more etc... -Does that help ya?

Actually, if the laptop was built within the last 4-5 years, it most likely has a PCMCIA slot. Being a Packard Bell, this pc is probably right on the border line of 4 years or more.

Is the 56K modem internal, or is it a card that goes in the side? If it's a card, then there's your PCMCIA slot. If not, then you'll need to look closely for one.

As Brad mentioned, you'll need a PCMCIA NIC 10/100 Ethernet card. Those are usually supplied as part of the contract with many Broadband ISP's.
