Hi All,

I have a Window XP workstation at home using a dial-up
connection to Earthlink. I did not catch up with recent M/Soft pathches and... no wander my PC contracted the virus/worm: W32.Welchia.Worm. After a dozen reboots I
managed to download the tool from Symantec and to delete
the virus. Now I'd like to prevent my PC from being
infected again. Unfortunately I cannot install SP1 or SP1A
on XP, which (according to M/Soft) is a prerequisit for
their patch - for whatever reason the installation of SP1/1A from Windows Update fails.

I decided to implement as per Microsoft's advice sort of a
workaount, i.e. to protect ports 135, 139, etc. from the
inbound internet traffic. M/Soft says I can use ICF
(Intenet Connection Firewall), however I failed top figure out how to enable this firewall and to protect these ports.
Again let me underscore: this machine is not a part of
the Internet Connection Sharing - it directly dials up to Earthlink and does not share this connection with any other machine.

Q1:
I would very much appreciate if somebody could provide me with very detailed instructions as to how to manipulate with this Firewall.

Q2:
Is there any way to get a CD with SP1A for Windows XP ?

Thank you in advance,

Henry Monster.

I have windows xp home edition and use earthlink as my dialup isp and I use the free zonealarm product to block that port. It is fairly easy to setup as it will ask you if you want to allow internet access for programs as they try to access it.

Hope that helps.

You should be able to order ths service pack from microsoft.

Good luck

See if any of these links help you.

You can contact Microsoft and purchase a SP1a CD for about $10. You will also see it listed often in the free CD's that come with many Computer Magazines.

Stop using the Wizard to try and enable ICF:

MS Technet:

"It is not a good idea to turn on Internet Connection Firewall on any connection that does not directly connect to the Internet. IF you turn on Internet Connection Firewall for the network adapter of a client computer that is running Internet Connection Sharing, Internet Connection Firewall interferes with some communications between that computer and all other computers on the network. For a similar reason, you cannot use the Network Setup Wizard to turn on Internet Connection Firewall on the Internet Connection Sharing host private connection. This is the connection that connects the Internet Connection Sharing host computer with the Internet Connection Sharing client computers. Turning on a firewall in this location would completely prohibit network communications."
