URGENT HELP NEEDED :-)

I have had a PowerBook G3 266 for a couple of years now, at first the internet and everything was fine, i used the modem at home and ethernet at work. Then quite suddenly the internet gave up (using the modem or ethernet). It will connect to other computers on my office network using ethernet but the internet won't work. Also the modem will dial up and connect but nothing internet related will run, e.g Internet Explorer, Netscape, AOL IM, Eudora etc. I have tried fixing the problem using Norton Utilities, and other stuff, I have even tried looking for viruses but found none, although once, a program called Agax found that my system was infected by SevenDust, so I got rid of the infected files and everything seemed to be ok, but still it would not connect to the internet (modem or ethernet). Please help me as this problem is really annoying me now!

If you have not done a clean install of the system, you should do that first. You may have a corruption of TCP/IP, or ARA, or whatever you use to connect. Whatever it is it sounds like a software problem. Clean install usually works every time. If the problem recurs after you add back your extensions (do so a few at a time), you will know where to look.

This certainly sounds like a software configuration issue to me. Our users here always give me that "all of a sudden..somethjing just happened" routine. You may not be able to trace what occurred but rest assured, something DID occur.

Apple Menu | Control Panels | tcp/ip

Look at the "Connect Via" drop down menu. That should be set to Ethernet for your work environment to function properly. In addition, while the tcp/ip window is open, go to File Menu | Configurations. Is the "Default" configuration the only one listed in the left hand window pane?

On my laptop I've got several configs there - airport for work, compuservePPP for home, etc .... This is a good location to toggle between configs as it will make the changes in the IP address and subnet mask (et al) when you click "Make Active".
