Hi Guys,
I have a 3640.It was working fine and today when I tried started it after reboot, it didn't finish all the steps and stopped with "failed to initialize" no prompt. I've tried going into ROM mode and when I typed rommon2>reset it took me back to the old screen. Could that be a corrupted flash and if so how can I update the IOS when I can't even get a prompt. I'm using IOS ver 12.0. Also on the screen, I can see that it did decompress the image fine and when it starts executing it stops right after it displays "image text-base 0x... data-base 0x...

You can use Rommon to upload a file to flash via tftp or hyperterminal (using xmodem).

Hi there,

If you send the router in rommon mode try the following:

romon1> dev (to see which devices may hold your image-- internal flash or flash card)
romon2> dir flash: ( to see the name of the image in flash) If you get any kind of "invalid magic number" it means that your existing image is corrupted and you will need to upload a fresh copy using xmodem command from rommon mode. If the file is ok:
rommon3>meminfo to see that if there is nothing wrong with your main memory where the main inmage will selfdecompress.

Last type in
rommon4> b flash(or slot0 where your image is):<image name> to directly boot the image from flash memory.

Cheers
