I need a new UPS backup sys. I don't know enough about it to decide which one to buy. What does the AVR (automatic voltage regulation) mean? What is the difference btw the systems with AVR and the ones without? Any input will be appreciated. Thanks!

AVR means that the UPS can adjust source voltage swings (both up or down) within a certain range without having to resort to battery power and they usually have a very fast response. Without it, you usually only have low source voltage protection where at a set point (usually around 100V) the battery will kick in and these are usually a bit slower. Go with one with AVR. You can get separate voltage regulators that you can put in series with a non-AVR UPS for equivalent performance, but that solution will cost more.
. There is yet another type, the true UPS, where the load is always running off the battery - the AC side is simply a full-time charging circuit. No switching time, no voltage fluctuations at all. Much more expensive, of course. But well worth it in some applications.
