Upgrading

Ok at present i have a Abit kt7a raid motherboard with a Via vt8363 chipset. 8363-686b-6a6lma19c-ww. With a Duron 800mhz

Ive been told to upgrade my bios but i cant find the right file on the website to use in the flash

So ive analysed my motherboard book and the settings it says i can get.

The book and bios say that maximum multiplier factor i can have is 12.5 and the cpu fsb is 155 so from that does it mean i can have a processor of 1937.5mhz??(155*12.5) I am wanting to put a Xp2400(2ghz) in as my book says i can have 200/266 and the xp2400 is 266mhz.

Would i be able to use an xp2400 with my settings on 12.5x155 as the xp2400 equals 2ghz in speed and is slightly higher than the 1937mhz i think thats capable here.

Can anyone tell me if anything ive said here is correct and if i can simply get my new processor, and also what settings i would need to change in the bios manually under user define, without upgrading the bios as it seems complicated.

Here's what the website says for your particular model:

- AMD Socket A Athlon (100/133MHz FSB) up to 1.4GHz
- AMD Socket A Duron (100MHz FSB) up to 1.3GHz
- AMD Socket A Athlon XP Palomino (0.18 micron process) up to 2100+
- AMD Socket A Athlon XP Thoroughbred (0.13 micron process) up to 2000+

Ok so does this mean i can put an xp2400 into my motherboard without an update?

What would i change the settings on my bios to?
just 12.5*155

I know the bios can control up to 1200 , but after that the user define options would need to be used

When i mention 2400, thats the xp athlon version which is 2ghz and the list says 2000+ so that means i can put the xp2400 in with no trouble in the bios right??Although my information says my motherboard can you run at 266mhz and your athlon runs at 133

No, you can put in the XP thoroughbred 2000+ or the Athlon XP Palomino 2100+.

You cannot put in an Ahtlon XP 2400+, your board will not support a processor above and beyond the two I just mentioned.

You can either get a new board (you may also have to get a new video card and/or RAM, depending on the board) that supports the XP 2400+, or you can settle for the XP 2000+.

Your choice.

You seem to be confusing yourself leeegglestone. Dont match the athlon labeling number up to the actual processor speed in GHz...

The Athlon XP 2000+ runs at 1.67 GHz
The Athlon Xp 2400+ runs at 1.93 GHz (roughly 2 Ghz)

When the list above says your motherboard supports an Athlon XP 2000+, that means it supports the "1.67GHz" that the Athlon Xp 2000+ runs at. This does not mean that it supports the 2 Ghz that the Athlon XP 2400+ runs at! And if that's the list from the manufacturer's web site, I would think that the information would be valid.

Another thing you seem to be confused about is the labeling of front side bus speeds. Typically a FSB today is dual or quad channel, meaning a FSB speed advertised as being "333 MHz" may actually be 166 MHz dual channel, effectively meaning 333 MHz of speed. CPUs work with front side bus speeds ranging from 133 MHz dual channel (266 MHz effective) to 200 MHz quad channel (800 MHz effective).

So above when you're talking about a FSB of 266MHz and 133MHz....they're actually the same thing. If your processor runs at 266MHz FSB, you'll need RAM running at 133MHz to support it.

I know im getting confused, its just when my motherboard says i can run a processor of 266mhz, and well the xp2400 runs at the bus speed.

Could i run an xp2400 at a slower rate like my maximum multipier speed of 12.5 Even though i wont get full potential performance from the cpu its gonna be far more than my current 800duron
Some people have said i can do this, but im getting mixed views unhelpfully lol

Yes...you can do that! As long as you know that your motherboard wont support it's top speed and you wont be disappointed about that...go ahead and stick that 2400+ in there. I'm pretty sure it should run at the maximum your mobo can handle.
