i have tried to install windows 98, and then windows xp but keep getting a message "you already have an operating system running, cannot run upgrade" anyone have any tips? thanks

Making an assumption that you have 95 installed and trying to do an upgrade with an OEM or full (not upgrade) version.
If you are not wanting to save anything, use fdisk to delete the partition and let the new version install on the next boot.
Otherwise , may require you to rename or delete win.com, or the registry, or the desktop directory, or the windows directory.
A clean install works best. Ed Fair

Any advice I give is my best judgement based on my interpretation of the facts you supply. Help increase my knowledge by providing some feedback, good or bad, on any advice I have given.

You Can start with MS-DOS, and Rename the Windows Folder to Win1 or Winant, also have to rename the Win.com File.

After this, run the installation, this way let you to save Time formating your PC, and the installation runs without problem.
And you do not lose any File or Dynamic Library from you old Windows Installation.
And you can Restore Peacefuly your system like it was previously, but of course in Win98.

Care !!
Check all your Components, like Video and Sound Card, NIC, and Modem, you may need to reinstall some of this.

Good Luck !!!
