I'm upgrading current NT 4.0 domain to windows 2000. There is a new server with windows 2000 and domain already setup. I want the current nt 4.0 domain to join the new w2k domain but am only getting an option to join as a child domain. Joining as child can i then migrate users and exchange mailboxes to the new domain with ADMT and the move mailbox wizard and then be able to remove the old domain?

thanks

thanks shackdaddy...setting up test lab now but wanted to get some feedback on here.

HI.

I have done something else in a similar scenario.

I had a single NT4 Exchange 5.5 server, and needed to add a W2K server.
I wanted to make both servers in the same domain and make the change transparent to users and to the exchange server which is still currently running Exch 5.5 on the NT4 server.

Here is what I did:

* Formatted a 8gb empty NTFS partition from another NT machine on the primary disk of the new server.
* Installed NT4 server on the new server as BDC. (on the preformatted 8gb NTFS partition as C drive)
* Promotted the new server to be the PDC (and the original server to BDC), and verified in the Event log that NETLOGON and domain replication is working fine (I had to fix some problems that were caused by the original server).
* Upgraded the new server to Win2K , installed and configured AD, DNS, etc...
The new AD W2K domain controlleris now still acting as PDC of the SAME domain (same SID) of the NT4 server.
I didn't need to make changes at the NT4 server, even didn't need to install ADC on it because the upgrade to AD was transparent to the NT4 exchange server.

* I am planning to later upgrade the NT4 Exch5.5 server to W2K + E2K , but this will be at a later time.

So, this is another way to consider.
It can only be relevant to you if you havn't yet deployed the new AD domain in your production network...

Easiest thing to do would be to join the old domain with the new server and start upgrading in the same domain. However, i want to change the naming to company.com instead of current domain name.

On the new server with 2000 preloaded i've installed AD and all services are running properly. The domain name is company.com The test lab i setup a w2k AD in one domain and then have an NT PDC with Exchange. Info on both sides accessible via the trust.

When I joined the new domain as a child domain, I lost functionality of the exchange server when i did this.....what would be the best way?

I can move the server within the same domain but not to the parent domain......

When i try using a site connector it can't find the server either

thanks
