I need some advice and assistance.
My daughter has a Dell Inspiron 8200 Laptop with the Microsoft® Windows® XP Professional Operating System and the Microsoft®Works Suite 2002 w/ Money 2002 Software Bundle. I want to download Microsoft® Office XP Professional w/Money Software. Word, Money, and Picture It! Photo and Dell Image Expert Standard are already loaded on the computer and are included with the MS Office XP Professional. Encarta and Streets & Trips are loaded and are not included in the MS Office XP Professional.

I am not familiar with the XP Operating system since I have the Windows 98SE.

What do I need to do in order to install the Microsoft® Office XP Professional Software?

Do I need to delete Word, Money, and Picture It! Photo and Dell Image Expert Standard which are already installed?

Can I just install the new Software on top of what is already loaded?

Do I need to back up or copy files before I install the Software?

Can I leave the Encarta and Streets & Trips installed or do they have to be deleted?

Too many questions. Can someone please tell me what to do and the steps necessary? Thank you.

Merry Christmas.

Office XP has the ability to upgrade existing Office products (going from memory). I don't know if there is enough corelation between Works and OFfice to convert files to be compatible or not.

My advice is to usually uninstall something before installing something newer that may or may not conflict. You should be able to keep any existing documents she has already created.

I would get rid of the Works and Money installed with XP. Then install Office XP Pro.

I would backup all of your documents you want, then just load the office xp over the works, I loaded my xp office over my office 98 and it worked perfect. If you do have any problems then just after you have loaded it you can go to XP's option in the start menu accesory menu the reload previous setup and go back and it will automatically go back to your previous setup. Make sure you make a setup point before you load it though. But you shouldnt have any problems.

Thanks for your help. I got it downloaded and now can't update because I don't have administrator rights. How do I get them? Thanks.

If you are using MS XP, you either have to logon as Adminstrator, or create your user with Administrator rights.

If you have the logon screen when XP first boots up (to select multiple users, you can hit CTRL+ALT+DELETE twice. Otherwise, if you boot right up into the XP system (no users to select) then you can just goto start->logoff. Then do the CTRL+ALT+DELETE thing twice.

Now you should see a logon screen. Put Administrator for the name, and enter the password you selected when you installed (upgraed XP). If you didn't install it yourself, there is probably no password, and it may prompt you for one.

Finally, once logged on as administrator, go to Start-> Control Panel -> User Accounts.

Then you can select your username, and change the attributes to Computer Administrator. You will still have your Administrator account, as well as your user account - that now has administrator priveleges.

If you don't trust yourself, or others that log on to our PC, you can install the program from the Administrator logon, but it is usually better to have your User Account with Admin priveleges. If "safety" is still an issue, create a second user account, that you would use on a regular basis, and password protect your first account - that way it keeps you (or others) from having "too many" priveleges to do "any damage" to your system.

Good Luck.
Let us no if you have anymore questions.
