Upgrading Processor

I have an HP Brio PC with a 500 Mhz Processor, 128MB RAM and a 7GB HDD. I use it mainly for the Internet and Flight Simulator but I get poor frame rates in the latter.

I've thought about upgrading my processor, but am looking for the cheapest way to get a good performance increase - I've already upped the ram from 64MB.

What sort of thing do I need to consider about upgrading my processor - is it a simple unplug one, plug in the other as with the ram or is it more complex?

Thanks a lot,
Noel.

Your system has a "Super Socket 7" motherboard (100fsb) only trouble is the fastest AMD CPU that this motherboard can support is "550" K62, so not much of an upgrade I am afraid.
If you want a serious performance boost then you will have to swop out the motherboard and CPU but that brings other problems along with it ie: most new motherboards are now DDR memory only and upgrading your system often means going for a bigger power supply.
The inevitable conclusion to all of this is often that it is better to sell you current base unit as a going concern, and just buy a new replacement (base unit only)

Little slip, I think you have an AMD K6II 500, many do! and if it is then the above stands.
HP's generally have a "SPEC" sticker stating generall hardware configuration, please post back if poss.

Hi Martin

Thanks for your reply, very useful. I think I'll just look at getting a new system - the processor is only one part and for a good all round improvement in performance I'd need more than just the processor anyway - and to get to anything like a good spec would probably mean spending as much as I would on a new PC anyway!!

I'll see if I can find the Spec sticker when I get home, and let you know what it says.

Thanks
Noel.
