Hello all...

I have a quick question regarding setting up our first Windows 2000 Domain controller.

I have set up a new server, installed Windows 2000 on it fresh from scratch. I want this machine to be the Win2K DC and DNS server.

From what I read, MS recommends that you upgrade you PDC to Win2K and then run DCPROMO on it to make it a Win2K DC.

Now... Can I run DCPROMO on my freshly installed server instead? If so, will it downgrade the NT4 PDC to a BDC? Is this possible at all or am I really going to have to upgrade that PDC?

Background: Our place is a single domain, 1 PDC 1 BDC, 3 member servers and about 80 clients running NT4 Workstation.

Thanks in advance

Once you run DCPROMO and upgrade your Win2K server to an Adctive Directory server It WILL take control of your network. That is why MS recommend that you ALWAYS upgrade your PDC first. In active directory there is no such thing as PDC and BDC. They are all Domain Controllers. Yes you can run DCPROMO and yes it will demote your current PDC to a DC. Then The new Win2K AD machine will run things. James Collins

That did't work!

I ran dcpromo on the fresh installed Windows 2000.

-If I say to create a new domain, it says that the domain name is already in use

-If I say additional domain controller it says that the domain name is not an Active Direcotry domain.

Once again: The NT4 PDC is on a different machine. This is a freshly installed Windows 2000 server. I want to make this machine the first Windows 2000 Domain controller!
