I just reinstalled XP Home Edition when I ran into problems. I ran FDisk and did a complete install.. Install was from a factory recovery disk, 2003 version.

What are the critical patches that I need? Many thanks.

Windows XP Service pack 1a if you haven't already got it, plus whatever WindowsUpdate says you need which is quite a lot.

Are you saying I need to load Service Pack 1a and every patch since 2003 (My version of XP)?

If so, where do I get a complete list?

Yes, go to start -> right click my computer -> properties.
If it says "Windows XP Professional Service pack 1" or "Service pack 1a" then you don't need to apply that, just visit WindowsUpdate.

It is possible that the computer company included some of the fixes on the CD to reduce the installation time, but this is not always the case.

You can get the Security update CD from Microsoft to install patches up to last October (although the CD is dated February 2004) for free in order to avoid downloading large numbers of patches, but it is unavoidable to do some downloading.

But whatever you do, make sure you install a firewall or enable the XP in built ICF on your internet connection before going online otherwise you are likely to get hit with Blaster or Sasser.
