I am running Windows 98SE. I have purchased a second hand licensed copy of Windows ME but when I try to upgrade to Me a message box tells me I can only use an 'upgrade' version of Windows Me. Rather than spend even more money does anyone know if I can simply delete the windows directory (which is in it's own partition on the hard disk) and then install the full version of Windows ME?

Yes. But you would be better off to totally re-install everything from fdisk on up. Ed Fair

Any advice I give is my best judgement based on my interpretation of the facts you supply.

Help increase my knowledge by providing some feedback, good or bad, on any advice I have given.

i wouldn't upgrade to Win ME
stay with your win98 se or just move to win2k
better memory management and stable

i have seen a few registry crash problem
please do not do any upgrade, do yourself a favour, full install, or else you end up wasting more time trying to figure out problems

good luck

I agree with the above post, WinME is in my opinion even worse than Win95 was in terms of stability. I had the joy of setting up two Dell computers with WinME pre-installed on them - Once setup, I went to uninstall some of the useless software (like the Microsoft bookkeeping software, that kind of stuff). After uninstalling two programs on each computer, they both had crashed and Windows decided to recover by re-installing the latest registry backup, i.e. the one from before the un-installs... Within ten minutes of run-time, both computers had an unusable operating system and needed to be reformatted.

WinME can be horrendously slow too, because whenever the system thinks it's in an idle state, Windows will start backing up system files continuously.

There is no reason you should ever consider WinME, try and take it back and get XP instead if you really want a new operating system - SP1 is out for XP and should make XP a little better than before.
