I am new to web development. I downloaded a free copy of Dreamweaver and love it. The 30 day trial is almost up. Should I buy Dreamweaver or UltraDev? I would like to build robust sites with subtle but artistic flash, merchant accounts, message boards, autorespond, surveys, etc. Is UltraDev difficult for a beginner, is it better to get unbundled apps, or all in one neat package?

Ultradev is ideal for new user to asp as it requires no knowlage of asp to get started, but you will need to learn a bit of code to do anything 'EXTRA' special.

If all you want is guestbooks and the usual ASP tools, ultradev is bang on. I would deffinately suggest getting Ultradev 4 as the older version (V1.0) has quite a few bugs.

It is probably a big help that you know how to use Dreamweaver as U/D is exactly the same in principal, with an extra bit of functionality thrown in. Worth upgrading from dreamweaver 3/4 even if you never use the ASP side, just so that you can if you need to. ----------------------------------------

I agree with KingMarl,

Now that I am a more proficient programmer, I find myself spending a lot of time in the code window.

UD is great for laying the foundations for a page, but you need to then go an massage the script a fair bit to make it more useful.

THe problem is that doing that can often confuse UD so that it won't see that it created the script any more. Does that make sense?

Even so, it is a great development tool.

Not that I am endorsing such practises, there are ways of extending the trial version to make it unlimited if you want to give it a real hammering.
