it'll take up to a 1.4gHz athlon, so long as it is a 200Mhz FSB one, and not a 266.

I've flashed plenty of giga-byte bios's it's not rocket science. If you are ok with taking off the case of your computer putting a new chip in you'll be fine.
Just download the correct bios from choose the latest non-beta bios for your board. This will be a zip with two items. unzip them to a floppy disk.
Now you are going to need a boot disk, if you are running nt or 2000 this could be an issue as they don't like them. So go to and find a 98 boot disk. doesn't need cd support just needs to be able to boot you to a command prompt.
Now restart your system get into hte bios (del during boot on most systems) and set A as the first boot device.
save changes and the system will reboot again.
make sure the boot disk is in the drive. The system should boot up to a command prompt (dos screen). Now switch to the disk you put the bios upgrade on. get a directory listing by typing dir and hitting enter.
you should see something like.
AF761.EXE
6bxds.F1
this was for the last board I flashed you'll have names that are different.
now just type the name of the exe fallowed by a space then the other file name.

AF761.exe 6bxds.F1
now don't do anything else, after a few seconds you'll get a message asking if you want to backup your old bios. This is a good idea so hit Y, then you'll be prompted for a name something like bios.old is fine.
Now you'll be asked if you want to program, or write or something say yes.
You'll see the little progress bar (dos style) then when it finishes at the bottem you'll get something like F10 to exit.
Hit F10 and your system will reset. remove anydisk from you drive and you should now be able to take a newer OS a bigger drive or what ever.
if this breaks your system or causes your pets to hate you It's not my fault.
