Is it possible / safe / sane to do an upgrade of our existing Storage Server 2003 boxes to be full domain controllers i.e. full blown Server 2003 machines? I know that hardware is up to the job and we already have two DC's running for two years. We also have spare full licences for 2003. Do we just pop the 2003 CD in?

Thanks

I don't know the real details, but according to the MS Website:

Q. Can devices based on Windows Storage Server 2003 R2 be used for tasks other than storage?

A. No, these devices are specifically designed to be file servers with large amounts of storage capacity

Q. How is Windows Storage Server 2003 R2 different from Windows Server 2003?

A. Besides being dedicated exclusively to file serving...

Q. Does this product replace my Windows Server 2003 machines?

A. Windows Storage Server 2003 R2 is a solution for consolidating your file serving functions on one device, replacing your general purpose servers that are dedicated to file serving.

Again, I personally don't know for sure; but as it's sold as OEM I would very much doubt the licensing would allow it be upgraded.

My view is no, you cannot (both legally and technically) as per the above quotes and as it's an OEM product. However if you require 100% clariffication I would suggest talking to an offical MS reseller / partner or even MS directly.

Good Luck,

Steve.
