Hi people, iam goint to be part in the migration of one DC running right now NT 4 to another new one running 2k3. This is my first time!!!

We have about 100 users, but we are goint to start with 10, this are the most important users they need 2k3 to run his new system this is why we want to start with this group, latter we can continue with the others.

My doubt is this one, if i like to create a new domain manually, this because the old one has a really really bad desing, and i prefer to start from scratch!!!.

I was reading that if i want to create a domain them i need to register my Domain Name on the Internet, this is correct...? Like i say this is the first time iam going setup a Domain Controller.

Them is this is true, i cannot create another domain if i not register the new Name no the Internet?

Thanks all for your time.

You do not need to register your domain out on the internet to be able to set up AD. Typically (about 1/2 of my clients) that have a registered domain name will set up AD with a .local extension. For example for company XYZ.COM they would configure AD with XYZ.LOCAL.

The reason a lot of companies like to do this is so that DNS resolution to their public web site is easier to set up.

I hope you find this post helpful.

Regards,

Mark

Cool, i was a little worry about that situation, them i can setup my new DC from scratch and start moving my user by groups and all that stuff.

Thanks markdmac!!!

markdmac, sorry i forget to ask this one:
I like the thing to name my DC XYZ.local, them in this case do we need to setup the DNS server on the DC...[ponder]
Greetings :-D

Yes, when you configure the first Windows 2000 DC by running DCPROMO it will automatically install and configure DNS. The Wizard will walk you through it.

I hope you find this post helpful.

Mark
