I am preparing to upgrade our company’s domain from nt 4.0 to server 2003. I bought two new servers to be the 2003 domain controllers. I currently have two servers:
NT2—PDC
NT1---BDC

The situation is that originally NT1 was the PDC, and NT2 was the BDC; however, NT1 had a hardare failure, so I had to promote NT2 and demote NT1. so since I cannot demote NT2; what is the best way to migrate to server 2003 on the new servers? If anyone can help with a step-by-step process, it would be much appreciated.

I would use an eval copy of VMWare and build a new BDC on that then promote to a PDC and upgrade this to Win2003. Once it has finished you can rebuild (not upgrade) your existing domain controllers with 2003 and run DCPromo to make them both dc's. When this has finished you will have 3 domain controllers, then move the FSMO roles from the VMWare DC to one of the others then run DCPromo on the VMWare DC to make it a member server which can then be deleted from the domain.

If it doesn't leak oil it must be empty!!

Am I missing something?

You promoted a BDC because the PDC crashed.
So, now you have two PDC's. One with outdated info, right?

Just wipe the old PDC clean and start over and use that machine as the first domain controller.
