Does anyone know if you can upgrade an MCE machine to an XP Pro machine. I have a client that has two MCE machines since they can't join the domain they can not have remote access to their workstations. I have tried to upgrade them to xp pro but it tells me that my cd key is invalid. That is not the case b/c i just bought a few new xp pro licenses just for this job.

I know there is a reg hack that will allow you to join an mce machine to a domain but its not supported by MS and i don't like doing it for business machines. For home machines i don't mind doing the domain join hack.

Thanks in advance

I called MS about this when I tried to upgrade XP mce to XP pro. I got through to a MS CSR who told me that mce to pro is specifcally not supported, eg: the xp pro key on the upgrade package will not work when upgrading from mce.

I ended up just wiping everything out and reloading clean with the pro upgrade disk. *It* found the mce installation as a previous version of windows and allowed me to go from there. Reinstalling the drivers was kind of a pain since the pc I was working on had a bunch of media devices in it.

As far as the reg hack goes: ( make sure you back up / etc... not guaranteed to work )
