I am a light user of visual basic 6. I have heard the new version vbnet is easier for novice users. Would I have all the same functions as vb6 in the net version? What is everyone else think about the product?

Thanks for your input.

According to the box VB.Net comes in, you need Windows XP, 2000, or NT to use the compiler. If you're programming to run on a Win 9x/ME computer, you'll have to stick with VB6.

Hi Gary

I guess it all depends on what a "light user" is. I think that .net is far harder for a novice. I agree that it's far superior but it isn't like vb6 where someone could write a (small) app after a few hours - vb.net is grown-up programming.

Are you a business or hobby user?

I have to agree with wekkew that VB.Net is a bigger hurdle for the casual VBer than VB6, 5, 4, 3, etc.

I'd disagree about any "grownup-ness" however.

This is more about the C++ types at MS "hi-jacking" VB, though I doubt it was consciously done. I think the "bizarro" nature of VB.Net is the result of the C++ heads having developed the CLR for their own needs, and being ignorant about other languages.

The "other language" stuff was an afterthought.

This is quite evident when you look at other .Net languages. Take a look at Fujitsu COBOL ".Net" (NetCOBOL) - it has ugly C++isms scattered through it as well.

MS blew it bigtime. I still expect the CLR to be broadened and new "clean" VBs and other compilers to be released later on.
