HI.

I'm now working on an upgrade of a SBS 4.5 server to SBS 2000.
The server is functioning with Exchange and as file and pring server for 10 clients.
I'm also doing hardware upgrade:
before= P3 500mhz, 256mb, 2*9gb SCSI.
after = P3 500mgz(same as before), 512mb, 2*9+2*18 gb SCSI.

The upgrade will be done over the existing SBS 4.5 setup (keeping a handy backup and a mirrored disk aside).

After the upgrade we will also implement the shared FAX service.

I have no specific questions, but if you have any specific tips from your experience, and about the Exchange upgrade I would like to read them.

I know well the W2K os ,active directory and DNS.
I know well about Exchange 5.5, but E2K is quite new to me (I know the basics - where to find the System Mangager etc..)
I have not yet upgraded to nor installed SBS 2000 - so tips about this are welcome.

Bye

upgrading works like a charm.

What I did extra (according to the steps you are taking) I perform an exmerge of all mailboxes (just to be sure ;-) if you know what i mean)

make sure that you have all drivers of hardware (and printers that were installed) and so on....

I wish you success on this operation....

Well, so far the SBS 2000 is working, but I have one problem.

The startup and shutdown (especialy shutdown) of the server are very SLOW!

It takes about 15 minutes to shutdown the server.
It takes more about 10 minutes to startup, the main delay is at the "Preparing Network Connections..." screen before logon.

More details:
The server board is Intel NL440BX/T440BX. I have upgraded to the latest BMC and BIOS ver P12 from Intel.
The SCSI adapter is the onboard SYMBIOS adapter (WIDE SCSI SE). Using drivers that W2K has detected by itself.
The LAN connection is the onboard Intel 8255x, using the drives of W2K itself (not from Intel). The NIC is working fine transferring files over the network.
Active Directory works fine with not much delays once the server is up and running.
DNS is working fine and is enabled for dynamic updates.
I have compacted and repaired the NTDS.DIT file using NTDSUTIL, but it didn't help with the slow shutdown.
I have applyed SP2 for W2K + SRP1.
I have applyed SP2 for E2K.

Reminder - the install was an upgrade over SBS 4.5 (NT4).

3rd party apps on the server (the problems were before I've installed those apps, so I guess they are not to blame):
Veritas Backup Exec 8.6
NAV CE server 7.6
NAVMSE 2.5
Powerchute UPS (an old version, don't remember the exact number)

Did I miss anything?

So what can cause the very slow or hang shutdown???

Thanks for any ideas.

hmmmm, I noticed simular problems on other W2K server boxes

After some troubleshooting I found out that these problems were kerberos related (so make a time server and synchronise your clients)

Check your switch config and put your NIC to a constant of eg. 100 Mbit full duplex ( not autonegotiate...)

that's all were I can thinck of for now......
