Upgrade from Home to Pro

I just upgraded my Dell machine from XP Home to XP Pro. After the upgrade windows lost my modem. The problem is discribed in MS Knowledge Base Article 329441. My question concerns their solution.

I would like to reinstall SP1, but that is built into the XP CD I got from Dell and can't be defined seperately. There is a SVCPK folder with .exe files named Qnnnnn.exe. If I run these .exe files would that acomplish the same as installing service pack 1? MS's other solution was to modify the registry manually, which I would like to avoid if possible.

go to dell.com and go to support. You should have the TAG Service ID.

AFter you do that, you can download the Modem driver from the drop-down list.

It happened to me yesterday as I moved to xp pro on my Dimension 2400

I did try reinstalling the modem driver from the CD that came with my 2400, is the download a different version?

Also, the comm drivers listed are for an Intel or Conexant modem, I am not at home, but I think mine was identified as a BCM, does it equate to either of these?

Exactly, mine was Broadcam too.

I lost the Audio and the USB thingy too, thus I had to redownload them. The one off of the CD didn't work.

You can and should download Service Pack 1a if it was not included in your XP Professional CD as a slipstream. The fact that it was included in XP Home will not help you in this instance:

Apply the Service Pack if your XP Pro CD did not have this slipstreamed. (Most do not).

Not sure if this helps but I had a similar problem with a new Time Notebook upgrading to XP Pro (Sevice Pack 1a) and they finally agreed that the spec (motherboard modem) did not support XP Pro (after 3 weeks of trying different fixes). Sent notebook back and my new Fujisu/Siemens upgraded with zero glitches.
