Hi!
I'm new in this Forum, not really a Newbie in Galaxy, but very glad to find one.
We are using CV 5.9 SP4 with 33 configured Clients (AIX,Linux, Netware, W2K, Win2003) and perform a primary copy on LTO2-Tapes in a Tape Library PV160T every night and at morning an AuxCopy as a secondary copy on Tapes which will be exported with Vaulttracker. Til today there was no need to update to 6.1 or 7.0....there were only a few problems in the past like slow Backup performance with Netware Servers in a SAN Environment etc....but now i want to match the latest versions and i'm not sure if i should update directly to 7.0 SP2 or should i take a step to 6.1 SP4 and then the next to 7.0 after a couple of weeks?? I've already a mediapack with 6.1 CD's and downloaded the SP4 but i don't want to do the upgrade twice if only one step is necessary. Any Help for best practice? Thanks a lot....

I would do the test upgrade on you db using the dbupgrade tool at
This will tell you if you can upgrade seemlessly or not
I do think that 5.9 to 7.0 is allowed but I would use the tool above first to see if your db will survive the upgrade process.

Let us know which route you go!!

Hi Frank!

Thanks! I found the 'upgradetest' yesterday afternoon on the support sites too. I know that 5.9->7.0 is supported but maybe it's not the best practice....i will find out if my database is ready for upgrade and post it here.

Hi

There is no more risk in upgrading from 5.9 to 7.0 than upgrading from 6.1

Done plenty of upgrades and had no significant problems during the upgrade process as yet (had a couple of dbs that had to be prestaged but, that's because of the upgrade from SQL2K to SQL2K5)...just make sure that CS and all MA's are up to the same patch level.

Upgradetest is a useful tool to test the db before you start..I think support must have been busy with people sending them their db's to test so they let people do it themselves now ;-)

Hi Birky!
Hi Frank!
So...I've done a 'preupgradecheck_for_7.0' from the Resourcepack-CD with the following results:
The command(s) completed successfully.
No duplicate names for Clients.
No duplicate host names for Clients.
There are no older Clients (more than 2 releases old).

I also send the last DR Set to commvault support. Test results will be mailed within 24 hours....I'll see.....

...just arrived:

Thank you for using the Automated DB Upgrade feature. The database for CommCell:xxxx has been tested and has passed all of the preliminary checks, and you can now proceed with your 7.0 upgrade. Although the test upgrade was successful, this does not guarantee an issue free upgrade. If issues are encountered during the upgrade process, please call the CommVault Technical Support line.

Well, it seems to be a good sign. Thx birky, for the statement that there is no more risk by directly upgrading from 5.9 to 7.0......now I prefer this way, too.
