I currently have an aging Dell server (single P-500/256MB) running NT-4 that hosts my Exchange 5.5 mail system. I'm thinking about upgrading it either piece meal fashion (RAM & CPU upgrades) or full blown to a dual P-3 or P-4 with 1 gig of RAM. I'm pushing for the second choice.

At this time my company isn't going to upgrade to Exchange 2000, so my question is; How will Exchange 5.5 run on a Win 2000 server and will I run into any problems doing a data export/import between NT-4 and 2000 server? I could stay with NT on the new system but I would rather start clean with 2000 instead of upgrading the OS later.

HI.

Depending on the number of clients, size of databases, current load on the system, etc, I would go for the first option now - more RAM and maybe more phisical hard disks as needed, and push for a future plan of upgrading to E2K+W2K (or DOT.NET) on a new hardware.

But if you upgrade now, it is OK to run Exchange 5.5 on W2K, but you should read the documents from MS and other about the exact proccess, and you will need to use ADC.
You should also plan for the domain upgrade from NT4 to Active Directory and DNS.
I don't have an exact link, but you'll find the info in Technet.

Bye
