Upgrade BSOD mismanaging system PTEs ? Abort ?

Greetings-

Windows 2000 Server sp4; Running Exchange 2003 Server. Upgrade to Windows Server 2003 "interrupted" with a BSOD:

The driver is mismanaging system PTEs

It then talks about making sure there is no new hardware installed and to try again and if the same thing happens to reboot into Safe Mode to disable or remove the drivers for the new hardware.

Well, I just completed the same upgrade on what is supposed to be the same exact server (model, disks, memory, OS, etc.) with no problems.

The problem is when I choose Safe Mode, it then says that it cannot boot into safe mode and that setup has to restart!!!

ANY OTHER OPTION DOES NOT WORK ON THE MENU

HOW DO I ABORT THE INSTALLATION??? CAN I GO BACK???? AM I UP THE PERVERBIAL CREEK???

Yes, that would help... but there is no reference to a specific driver. That's the problem. And I couldn't get out of the Reboot Into Setup->Installing Devices->Stop Error->Reboot Into Setup loop... With or without the Windows Server 2003 CD in the drive it kept going into Setup.

After holding to talk with Tech Support at Microsoft for 2 1/2 hours, and then spending another 2 hours on the phone with them, without finding an easy way to break the loop, we were forced to use the Windows 2000 Server CDs to run setup and install another copy of the OS into a different folder.

Well, at least now we were able to access the disks. From there we formatted the system drives and installed Windows Server 2003 from scratch.

This being our Exchange Server we were able to invoke the disaster recovery option for Exchange which pulled all of the Organization info from AD and basically saved the day; that and resetting the computer account in AD for the server.

SO MY ADVICE IS...make sure ALL your drivers are up-to-date, and maybe even all Microsoft Certified, OR... just start from scratch in the first place so you know what to expect.
