Updating PDF Document

I just started with a company that is manually creating graphically high-end PDF reports for web analytics. The current process is to cut n paste daily data from a csv file to PDF using Abobe Illustrator.

Does anyone know the best way to automated the process of using raw data from flat files to update an existing PDF template file (Perl or otherwise)?

I know that Perl can generate formatted PDF, Excel, etc files...but what I need to work on is too complicated design and graphic wise to BUILD the file formatting in Perl.
