I have a 2924 switch and I decided to update the IOS to version "c2900xl-c3h2s-tar.120-5.WC9a.tar" the upload to the switch via tftp went fine and uploaded succesfully. however right after I uploaded it I issued the "reload" command and forgot to issue the "boot system flash" command. Now my switch can't find the IOS that I have installed. What can I do? I did the "dir flash:" command and found that my IOS is still compress as a .tar file, whats the deal with that? Shouldn't it be a .bin. Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks

this is the command you should have used to download the tar file , this uncompresses it and makes separate html files and it breaks out the .bin file . Then you needed to set your boot command and then write mem to save the config . Looks like you used the standard way of updating a plain bin file . If you don't need browser access it is much easier just to use the .bin file . The tar file is only needed for web browser access.

Enter the following command to copy the HTML file from the TFTP server to the switch Flash memory:

switch# tar /x tftp://server_ip_address//path/filename.tar flash:html

Probably the only thing you can do at this point is try to delete the tar file . Get the .bin file from Cisco and then you will have to xmodem the file thru the console port , this will take awhile as it transfer at only 9600 bps , but it can be done .
