Is it possible to upgrade a Windows 2000 Pro to the Windows XP Home edition?

Marc

Nope. It needs to be WinXP PRo before you can upgrade. Here is the upgrade chart from MS:

The reason you can't "upgrade" is because the Windows NT and 2K OS's use the older NT kernel which has been completely remodeled in XP. However, if you own a license (cd-key) of Windows 95/98/ME, then you can still buy the upgrade version and do a full clean install using the CD-KEY...

Let me correct myself...

It's not because of the NT Kernel that you can't upgrade. Microsoft considers XP Home as a part of the same product line as Windows 98/ME. They also consider XP Pro as part of the same line as Win2K Pro. This is the "only" reason why they don't want to allow 2K Pro users to go to the "Home" edition of XP.
