This latest update has destroyed my network. As soon as kb958644 was installed all network adapters stopped responding, virus software (AVG) locked up and various print drivers gave out.

At first I thought it was the latest update to AVG (build 196) but it is totally the windows update. I had to go to all clients and turn off auto updates and uninstall KB958644

Has anyone else had this problem? I googled but did not find anything. I find it hard to believe we are the only ones.

I had a similar problem on Vista Ultimate with another patch about 12 months ago. Going back to the restore point before it was installed fixed it.

That said I installed KB958644 4 days ago with no problems. Is SP1 installed? If not, that could be the problem.

I am running Vista Ultimate with SP1, and also AVG 8.0.175.

Richard.

The very urgent release of this update seems to indicate that it is too important to miss out on installing it. Have you referred this problem to Microsoft so that they can work with you to get this update in without breaking your systems.

Support for Windows Update problems is free, so my advice, for what it is worth, is to leave the update off your system but work with Microsoft on solving the problem and finally getting this update installed.

Please keep us informed of how you eventually resolve this problem.

good idea, I'll have to try and contact them tomorrow. I'll keep ya posted

FWIW, since it hasn't been posted in either group yet.

Microsoft releases emergency Windows patch to head off worm attack

October 23, 2008 (IDG News Service) Microsoft Corp. fixed a critical bug in its Windows operating system Thursday, saying that it is being exploited by online criminals and could eventually be used in a widespread "worm" attack.

Microsoft took the unusual step of issuing an emergency patch for the flaw several weeks ahead of its regularly scheduled November security updates, saying that vulnerability is being exploited in "limited targeted attacks." The company had already announced plans to rush out the patch.
