Ok I have an update query that is amending the autonumber. I do this every year at ther year change (autonumber relfects job number, dont ask me why for i didnt write it). There are 2 tables i have to do this for. In one table this works... in the other table i get a key violation error. There are only 2 fields being updated. the Autonumber and a text field that is required for the record. Both proceedures for the 2 tables are exactly the same... is there any idea as to why it worked in one and not the other?

Are the fields being updated in the two tables exactly the same type and size? You should also check to see which field is actually defined as the primary key as this would probably make s difference.

Both of the autonumber fields are Primary keys...

the two tables are set up the same... one is for the parts dept... one is for service..
