unwanted double space when importing files

Can you reopen the text in Word and see if you can get rid of the formatting? When I used Pagemaker (ID these days) I always had so many problems with Word docs, I would save them out of Word in TXT format (strips out all formatting), place that in PM and then apply formatting (via styles).
