I am experiencing unusual activity on my hard drive. This happens when the pc has been inactive for a while and often late at night. The drive "chatters" for about 30-40 mins but stops as soon as I move the mouse.

I have run AV and Spyware including Norton, AVG, Kaspersy, Spy Doctor, Ad Aware and Spybot.

I have checked the evntlog but it shows no posts.

If I open task manager and wait sometimes it will use 7% CPU but does not show what service is using this activity. I have also used Security Task Man but this does not show anything either

I do not have system restore on but use Norton Ghost and GoBack but these are not running at these times. I do not have any programs scheduled to run at these times.

Can anyone think what this might be or if it may be a problem?

I am running XP Pro SP2, 1gb Ram, 250GB SATA HDD.

Thank you

Are you running an automated defragmenter? Is your anti-virus set to scan automatically? Is your system set to get automatic updates?

Hi,
When you sort the Task Manager processes by CPU what
does it show is using the 7% ?

Thanks for the replies.

The task manager does not show any activity other than explorer.exe, taskmgr.exe. There are no other programmes i can see running. there are no scheduled programs running nor are there any updaters running.

when ur pc is idle for a while the indexing service will start

Thanks for that Lemon 13.

I had switched indexing service to manual but I hadn't unticked the box in the disk properties. I've now turned that off on my drives and see if that makes a difference.
