unlink images in Windows 1

...you can't unlink images directly in indesign, you can unlink imported text though...
...with images you either embed or relink to another image...
...is there a reason you need to unlink an image?

Andrew,
I would like to unlink images for the following reason:
We are using InDesign for our organizations newsletter. The newsletter comes out periodically. I have used the same newsletter, with the same structure, to produce each newsletter ... just changing content.
Without the ability to unlink images, I am left with a growing number of links from previous issues. You observed that:

I have physically removed the old links but they still appear in the Links List with a question mark in a small purple circle. The links are no longer used and don't exist but they are still in the Links List.

...you will be left with missing links in the links palette if the image previews are still on the indesign document...
...you need to remove the image previews from your document pages for the links palette to be up to date...
...anything on your pages will be in the links palette whether they are missing or not...
...if you click the "go to link" button in the links palette it will take you to where that missing image is, you then delete it manually...
...after which the links palette will be updated...

...if your using the same basic template every issue, then you may want to set up one without any images included in your template (except that of recurring images like logos)...
...just use empty image frames to indicate rough position and do a file > save as > then choose the template option from the drop down menu...
...this will give you a .indt file, every time you open it you will always get a new clean document that prevents you from accidentally overwriting the master template...

Andrew,
Many thanks for the last post! You hit the nail on the head ... a template is exactly what I need. Most of the reoccurring items on the newsletter are on Master pages. The others I can put on one. Is it possible for one page to have more than one Master page? For example, the heading appears on every page. If I could put that on a layer by itself, that would be ideal.
