Unknown Password

I have just received a used cisco 2924 catalyst switch.
I am using hyperteminal via the console port.
As the switch was second hand the previous config is still present, including the old passwords which I dont know. Can the passwords be reset or the switch reset to remove the passwords, so I can configure the switch for what I need.
