Hi,
I'm trying to setup BackupExec 10.1 with a Quantum Superloader 3 SDLT 600. The media server is a new Win2k3 server with an Adaptec 29160 card dedicated for the autoloader. The SCSI bus is terminated. I installed as per the instructions, but had problems with communication between BE and the autoloader. The only meaningful communication that seemed to occur was the initialize command. Other commands would just reports that no idle devices were available.

As per a Symantec knowledgebase article, I downloaded the latest drivers and installed, this installed the tape drive fine and it now appears in device manager fine. I'm also getting slightly more response, such as media is now reporting correctly, and the devices seem to be displaying correctly in Backup Exec.

It still can't backup though. When I try to backup, BE reports that it's loading, as does the autoloader, but I left it to do this and it just seemed to load/unload continuously for a few hours. I notice in device manager that an unknown medium changer is installed, which doesn't seem right. I've tried updating the driver, uninstalling and forcing a hardware redetect, but the unknown medium changer just reappears. Info on the Quantum site, just suggests that I don't need to install their drivers, it should be covered by the ISV (Backup Exec) drivers.

Any thoughts before I contact Symantec/Quantum. I'm a little lost as I have no experience with Backup Exec or autoloaders.

cheers

The unknow medium changer is fine. That is what it supposed to be. If you look at the details the drivers are Microsoft.

Have you inventory a slot or tried a quick erase on a slot

Ahh ok. Microsoft they are.

I'll have another play next week. cheers
Mike

You might want to try installing the Veritas drivers if you haven't already. Also, you may need to mount a tape in the drive manually to get the drive to write data to it. I've had to do this several times after installing updates. Good Luck!
