Hello,
I am running Windows 98 (4.10 98) on a Compaq Presario 5150 series and have run into an Unknown Device within System Properties. After running through regedit, I find this unknown device to be listed under:
HLM/Sysdata/Internet/DialUpAdapter/TCP/IPSettings/General/Bindings/00000004::Unknown Device.
It also lists under
HLM/Enum/Network/VREDIR/0000/DeviceDesc Unknown Device.

The service driver is not listed within the "OS" Quick Restore CD that came with this Compaq, any ideas how I can identify which driver I need? Since it is listed under the dial up adapter, can I assume it is a hardware or software "update"? The modem on this machine is an internal US Robotics 56K Faxmodem PCI with the latest drivers installed from their web site

Any thoughts or peruses would be appreciated.

Thanks!

Chris

This happens quite frequently. I had several such entries. When I upgraded to XP it took those unknown and lists them as a generic devce. As long as the modem works this isn't a problem.

Thanks for the reply. I guess what started my digging into this is an application I was trying to configure, namely CheckIT suite. There are a few options that do not work with the modem tuning, since according to their technical support group, are caused by my unknown device within the Dial Up adapter "group". Otherwise, the modem works just fine, just this little hiccup with the application. Maybe it is time to move to XP? :)

Did it work at one point? I'm guessing that it did and probably got corrupted along the way.

I would try removing the Dial-up adapter and all TCP/IP protocols from Net'hood properties, remove the modem from Device Manager, reboot and reinstall the modem.

Reinstalling the modem usually places the TCP/IP entries back, but you might need to add it manually. Be sure to have the modem drivers handy before doing any of this. Just post back if you get stuck anywhere...

Actually it never worked properly, at least the application has not. Modem works fine. I have the modem drivers on the US Robotics disk, as far as the TCP/IP entries, if the modem replacement doesn't put them back, I may be stuck.

I will make a backup before I start, though. Thanks for the ideas, I'll give it a try and go from there.
