Does anyone know how to find out anything about an Unknown Device in the Device Manager? Windows seems to be able to figure it out if you point it at the right INF, but how do we find out which INF that should be?

I've tried using HWDIAG but it doesn't help all that much.

Thanks

Jibber.

Have you tried removing the unknown device from device manager? When you reboot, Windows will detect a device with no drivers installed, and try to find them. Sometimes it will list what kind of device it is...

If it doesn't list it check to see what does not work in your system i.e modem, sound, serial, e.t.c more then likely it could be related to a motherboard hardware or similiar. Update you chipset drivers and all others to see if it goes away.

look at the properties of the unknown device and see if it lists any resources associated with it. If it shows some resources then we may be able to determine what the device type is based upon standard resource settings. Doug
