I have a problem printing with QuarkXPress 4 to HP LaserJet 5000 printers using the Univers font. The kerning is bad. But only with QuarkXPress! Anything else printed with other applications with that font on the same computer comes out normal. Any ideas why?
Well Idji, just check the XTension Manager of QuarkXPress to see whether you have the Kern-Track Editor XTension installed in QuarkXPress and if not you need to get one. The Kerning you see on the screen is fine or is it only in the printout that the Kerning is not coming out properly.
And also make sure that you have the correct PPD selected in the Print dialog box under the Setup Tab > Printer Description.
I have found the solution for the correct printing (good kerkning) with the Univers Bold (65) font on an HP LaserJet printer (4100, 5000 or 5100).
First use LaserWriter (instead of AdobePS) in the Chooser in the Apple menu to create/select your printer.
Then, when you are ready to print, click in the General menu of the printing dialog box from the File->Print menu :
and select Fonts Settings
Click the Always download needed fonts checkbox. If you want the setting to be permanent, click the Save Settings button. Finally, print your document.
