Uninstalling Windows 95 Plus

Hi I just purchased a used laptop that is running Windows 95 Plus and I want to put Windows 98 on it. The system will not let me uninstall the operating system. It keeps coming up with the error "sage can not be removed because backups are missing or the wrong version" I do not have a Windows 95 cd nor do I have an upgrade for Windows 98. Any suggestions as to how to get this off my system??

First, be aware of the potential driver issue with your CD with the new OS.

Probable best bet would be to load the 98 install stuff to the hard drive and install from there once the windows directory has been deleted from the hard drive using deltree. But that is dependent on your having bunches of room and possibly drivers from the laptop manufacturer.

If your not concerned with the data on the disk then the best bet would be to boot to a windows 98 startup disc, fdisk/mbr then reformat/partition the drive. Then run the win98 install from CD. As mentioned though not all drivers may be available.

Not only will all drivers possible not be available, if your laptop requires a non-dos partion, f-disk will wipe that too.

edfair is correct in his response and if you need further help with the deltree thing we can walk you through it.

Little side note. Win95 Plus is an add-on to Win95 and really has no direct bearing on what you want to do. If you will post back the version of Win95 you have on that machine and the cpu, amount of memory, and hard drive size and include the make and model number of the laptop, we can be of more help.
