Hi,

I recently took a job as IT Administrator for a firm that uses a pop3/smtp mailsystem. A year back they decided to try Exchange 2000 but never got anywhere than to install it into the organisation and then when I started I promoted the server to a DC. Afterwards I deleted the Exchange - mainly because it didn't work at all. I had to delete it manually but now i'm stuck with parts of the Exchange structure on my domain. Im installed Exchange 2003 today - which will be out new email-server and it still sees the old exchange 2000 server. If I try to remove it from System Manager I get the message that users are still using it for mail. I have searched for users in AD and found none. So now i'm stuck with the extra Exchange 2000 ghost.

How du I get rid of Exchange 2000 in my AD?

/Christian

Hi Bob,

Thanks for the advice but the first one will also delete the new Exchange 2003 installation that i'm working on and the second advice is not possible without having the Exchange 2000 server running which is not possible.

/Christian

Hi aZLAn2000

The first one works even though you don't see exchange on your server it is still there.
The organization that was created on install can only be removed by using the service pack 2 removeorg tool.

otherwise any exchange installation will still see the first install and your system will become screwy after a while.

I went through th same thing several weeks ago.

Manually removed exchange 2000 try to install 2003 and it still saw exchange 2000 had to remove the org first.

Okay. Thanks! I'll try it then. I will post in here what happends. Which machine did you run the /removeorg on?

/Christian

Okay. Just performed the /removeorg twice. First from a Service Pack 3, then from Service Pack 2. Didn't work. It came with some generic error. I then took the Exchange 2003 CD and performed a: setup.exe /removeorg and that actually worked! I will now wait for the DCs to make a full replication as we have multiple WAN sites with their own DCs.

Thanks!

/Christian :)

Update: Just reinstalled Exchange 2003 and everything works!

You just saved me a lot of trouble!
