__The < recycle bin> in my system (WinXP Pro + Celeron 2400 Mhz ) did not seem to empty completely : the icon showed it was not empty even though there was nothing in it when I double-clicked the recycle bin icon !

__ When I actually deleted some files then emptied the recycle bin, there was a message:

"Are you sure you want to delete "NPROTECT" ?

After I select "Yes" , nothing happens and I still see the unemptied bin !!

I also deleted all Files and folders in the "Recycler" in all drives and nothing changed .

Please advise how to fix this annoying issue . Thanks,

Thanks, Sensei bcastner, for the tips. I got problem running the first one : [ Start->Run->CMD->C:\> rd /s /q c:\recycled ]
The output was : "The system cannot find the file specified." . I guess I did something incorrectly . Please comment.

_ I also D/L the regfix #64 (i.e. to restore recyle bin) and run it. Unfortunately, this regfix did not repair the problem.

_I also reinstalled WinXP Pro + SP2 , still nothing changed!

Please further instruct. Thanks,

Best regards,

You could try removing the Norton protection of the Recycle Bin and then see if you can fix the Recycle Bin. You could then Enable Norton again.

To remove the Norton Protected Recycle Bin:

"NOTE: Before purging protected files, follow these steps to retrieve important data:

1. Right-click the Norton Protected Recycle Bin, and choose Norton Unerase.
2. Unerase any files you may need. Any other files will be permanently deleted when you uninstall Norton Utilities.

Under Windows NT/2000/XP
1. Right-click the Recycle Bin icon, and choose Properties.
2. Select the Global tab.
3. Select the "Use One Settings for All Drives" radio button.
4. Select the Recycle Bin tab.
5. Select the "Standard Recycle Bin" radio button.
6. Change the text in the Title box to "Recycle Bin."
7. Uncheck "Show Norton Protection Status" if possible.
8. Select the Norton Protection tab.
9. Select a drive and uncheck Enable Protection. Repeat for each drive.
10. Select the "Also Empty Protected Files" option.
11. Click OK twice.
12. Reboot the computer.

Norton Protection has been removed from your system. To re-enable Norton Protection, reverse the above procedure."

I've experienced something of this nature before, and I simply did this:

Display Properties
Desktop
Customize Desktop
I removed the recycle bin from the desktop (uncheck box)
Applied, Ok'ed.
Then went back and did it again, and haven't had a problem since.

Could be something as the 2 above me said, but I also had a file come up "missing" or protected like that.

Thanks Sensei linney and jdrunt for your kind inputs.

I tried to cleanup my system of all Symantec products ( Systemworks, Ghost and WinDoctor). Somehow NPROTECT was left behind and most likely caused this problem.

_I attemted to follow Linney's advice but in all tabs in the Recycle bin properties pop-up, there is no reference to Norton Protection at all !. I tried my best to clean-up Symantec products from the system. Obviously, it is still not thorough enough . I am skahing in my boot thinking of the final solution : formatting the HD for this "recycle bin" icon !! Is there some "justice " in Cyberworld ?

_ I also tried jdrunt's suggestion but there is no checkbox in the "Customize Desktop" panel to remove the recycle bin . My O/S system is WinXP Pro + SP2.

Please comment. Thanks,

Removing the Recyle bin from the desktop accomplishes little; the setting only removes the icon and does not effect the underlying properties of the recycle bin.

For Symantec products you often have to use manual clean up utilities available from the Symantec site. See the references section in this article:
