undefined function problem

I have a database that appears to have become corrupted in that the left() function does not work in a query, returning a message 'undefined function left()' when I run it. It is part of a set of queries running off each other (including a cross tab that I know can cause problems sometimes). I have tried compacting and repairing and also manually importing the queries into another blank database, but to no avail.
Is there a solution without having to re write the database from scratch?
