Uncontrolable cursor movement

I had this on my last two laptops. The current is a Asthton Didgital Passport 21000, with a desktop PIV and 256M ram, 40 gig drive, 64 video ram running XP home edition.

The previous PC was a Sony pcg 319 400mhz 196 ram 6 gig running WIN ME.

So the Behavior is I'll be typing and the cursor will jump to somewhere behind where I have been, and of course I can't stop fast enough and I have to remove 4 or 5 characters, maybe fix formating it caused. It often causes text to be highlighted there and when I hit a key it gets deleted. This could be 3 characters, a line or a whole paragraph. The cursor will even jump to other windows and documents that are open and cause the same trouble. It might happen 10 times on one line. It is very frustating. I checked that the mouse settings are all turned down fron high sensitiveity, but that's not it at all. The keyboard and everything is set up ok. I don't know if a different keyboard should be set up, this is how it was from the factory.

It sounds to me as if you are suffering from an extra thumb syndrome, (accidentally hitting the wrong key).
Seriously though,it might be just a stuck key on your keyboard, (intermittent?) is this just software specific, (e.g. just in microsoft word, or notepad, etc.) or does it happen everywhere?
Can you plug in an external keyboard (one you know that works)?
Try .. Control Panel, Keyboard, and changing some of the settings

It's not the keyboard itself, it's brand new. I can associate it with any application.
How about MicroSoft!

But trying the other keyboard I like. That might give me clue.

I hate the way the new XP works with Drivers. It thinks it's doing everything for you but then it makes the wrong assumptions. That's like Mircrosofts help, it always asks me questions and not a one is the one that fits my situation and then you have just no where to go.

I think it is software like a bad driver.
