Uncompressed disk

Hi.
We added a second SCSI hard drive to an a Novell 4.2 compatible server. This disk was installed with the compression in off and now there is data loaded on it.
The question is how to make for this disk will be compressed without loosing data,I guess there is a tool for this change.
All replies welcome!!

I have used a tool called servermagic for netware from powerquest to do live changes to my storage. To be honest with you im not sure it will be able to deal with compression the way you want, but still worth a look.

You should be able to go into INSTALL.NLM, volume options, select the volume and turn compression ON. Then just wait for the compression engine to kick in at night and start compressing unused files.

Hi marvhuffaker, I have a question for you... the compression on Novell what it´s the factor of compression?? it is related of kind of files?? it´s size? if there is file system or .com .exe?? Or the best task is erase all volume, active the options you give me and reload data again?
I turned on the compression and my client dont gave me the results yet ..the disk is 20 Gb and data is arround 18gb...after compression what is the estimated saving in disk?? Thanks for all

jmartin, you are stuck in a microsoft way of thinking...

Compression on Novell is a background process. It has complex algorithms to determine what when and how to compress and decompress.

But it's all transparent to the end user from a workstation. It doesn't matter if a file is compressed or not to a user.

Also, the compression routine is a processor intensive function. By default, the routine only runs at night and scans for files that qualify to be compressed.

Don't erase the whole volume, that's not the way to do it, and it's not necessary.
