Unbearably slow brick-level restores

Been working on restoring 3 users' mailboxes from different tapes - the first few I did were pretty quick (as in, >100 MB/min), but for some reason now they're running horribly slow - as in <1 MB/min.

Using ARCserve2000 sp3 on WinNT4.0 (sp6), Exchange Server 5.5 sp4 (with the latest backup agent patch as well)

also, antivirus software service has been stopped. I'm not sure what else could affect the restore speed.

any ideas?

I have now updated the firmware of the DAT drive to the latest available driver from the Compaq website, but im still getting the same error...
